The Nurse Practitioner

What is a Nurse Practitioner?

A Nurse Practitioner is a Registered Nurse (RN) who has advanced education and training in a health care specialty area.

In the state of Connecticut, Nurse Practitioners must have a Master's degree to become certified in their specialty area and hold a second license as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN).

What service do Nurse Practitioners provide?
Under the direction of a licensed physician, Nurse Practitioners serve as Primary Care Providers (PCPs) for children and adults during health and illness. Services provided in collaboration with physicians and other health care professionals include:
  • Taking medical histories and performing physical examinations
  • Diagnosing and treating acute health problems such as infections and injuries
  • Treating and monitoring chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure
  • Ordering, performing and interpreting diagnostic studies, such as lab work and x-rays
  • Prescribing medications and other treatments
  • Providing woman's healthcare
  • Providing well-child care, including screenings and immunizations
  • Providing health maintenance care for adults, including annual physicals
  • Providing health education and counseling
  • Coordinating health services
Nurse Practitioners do more than provide direct care. Many are involved in education, administration, research and legislative activities to promote quality health care for all people in the United States.

    • Ask about people's worries and concerns, and their health vand health care
    • Promote wellness and self-caring by giving people the information they need to make healthy life-style choices and healthcare decisions
